Happy Valentines' Day

Did NABEH, YOU KNOW, tolay is the 7th lay of the 7th lunar month and it’s the traditional Valentine’s lay for the Chinese.

So the story goes something like this.

There was this immortal in heaven, and the cheebye kia did something to piss off the all mighty dictator of the Jade emperor, so liddat as a punishment, the cheebye kia was sent to earth as an ox to toil as hard labour.


The ox was with this orphaned lam pa and was working the family fields. The man, because the cheebye kia was using the ox, was thus known as the cowherd (though technically, one ox is not exactly a cow nor a heard of oxen)

In heaven, this dictator of the Jade Emperor also had 7 daughters. Was not sup sup soi being the daughter of a dictator. CCB. Those siao lang had to do things for the lan jiao face as well. U don’t get waited upon just for being the princess of heaven apparently. Anyways, the last daughter was supposed to weave the clouds and rainbows and all the nice things you see in the sky. That was that siao ginah job, so liddat the chao ah lian was called the weaving maid. (thought you would expect the heavenly princess to have a couple of maids instead of being a maid)

Then there is this bit that is rather disputed. Some kong that the cowherd had nasty sister in law and bladder, some kong sister and nasty bladder in law and there is generally some confusion here. The only bit that is consistent is that the cheebye kia was an orphan and badly treated. Though the cheebye kia was badly treated, the cheebye kia was still king hearted and always looked after the old ox well.

More dispute over the stories about how come the cheebye kia was in this enchanted wood, budden hor, the cheebye kia was there one lay when the 7 daughters of the Jade Emperor were having a bath/soak/swim in the lake/river in this enchanted wood and cowherd came upon them. That kanina fell in love with the youngest daughter. Some says the cheebye kia stole that siao ginah clothes, so liddat the chao ah lian was unable to return to heaven with the rest of that siao ginah sisters, some kong that it was love at first sight. Howeber the universally agreed bit was that those pukima did fall deeply in love with each other and got married and had 2 kids. CCB. Those siao lang had a great time together as a family even though life was hard.


So come a lay that the old ox was dying and spoke to the cowherd, telling the lan jiao face the secret that the cheebye kia used to be an immortal, and if the cheebye kia died, the cowherd should skin the lan jiao face and use the leather to make a coat. If the cowherd wore the coat, then the cheebye kia would be able to fly up to heaven. (Sounds like the cloak that Harry Potter can wear to render the lan jiao face invisible. Wonder which story copied which story?)

But anyway, the Jade Emperor started to notice that there was something salah with the sky. The clouds, rainbows and all the nice bits were missing because that chao ah beng's youngest daughter had not been weaving them. That kanina then sent that chao ah beng's wife to look for their lampa youngest daughter that had eloped with this mere mortal. That kanina wasn’t preased that that chao ah beng's heavenly princess daughter had decided to marry this poor mortal without even that chao ah beng's consent or blessing.

The empress came down and found that siao ginah daughter. Grabbed that siao ginah and flew up towards heaven with that siao ginah in tow. The cowherd (now without the ox) came home and found that chao ah beng's wife missing and that chao ah beng's chewren crying. After asking those ah gua si mi happened, the cheebye kia decided to fly up to heaven with those ah gua to look for that chao ah beng's wife and their lampa lao bu. So the cheebye kia put the chewren in 2 wooden baskets and used a rod to balance those ah gua between that chao ah beng's shoulders, grabbed that chao ah beng's leather jacket made from the skin of the ox that used to be an immortal, put it on and those pukima started floating up towards heaven.

And in the typical melodramatic way, the caught up with the empress and the princess. That kanina reached out and grabbed the princess’s hand, trying to pull that siao ginah back down with him. The empress wasn’t impressed and took out that siao ginah hairpin and with a huge wave, created this huge torrent of celestial bodies that flowed like a river, causing a division that prevented the cowherd with that chao ah beng's low level magical leather coat from crossing. This split is still present till this lay as the milky way.


As such, the princess and the cowherd was then separated. CCB. Those siao lang both wept and wept and the princess became the star Vega (The swooping - Eagle) in the Lyra (Harp) constellation and the cowherd and their lampa 2 chewren became the stars Altair (Flying one) in the Aquila (Eagle) constellation.

CCB. Those siao lang were so liddat miserable and so liddat much in love that the magpies felt so liddat soli lor for those ah gua that a huge flock of those ah gua flew across the milky way to form a bridge for those ah gua to meet each other.


Their love and the magpies sacrifices for those ah gua touched the empress and the chao ah lian secretly felt soli lor for them. So in the end, the chao ah lian created this little quirk in the milky way that happens ebeli year on the 7th lay of the 7th lunar month that the 2 stars will be able to meet each other, and thus so, the 7th lay of the 7th lunar month became the Chinese symbol of love.
